I am a contemporary artist and illustrator based in Melbourne. I love to paint and draw.
I want people to be attracted to my artwork when they see it in a room. Attracted enough to actually go and look at it: investigate the intricate detail close up, immerse themselves in the vibrant colours and shapes, of my hand-painted and digitally-created abstracts, or find a connection to the meaning of the representational and narrative paintings
Some of my paintings explore the beauty and joy of colour; translucent, overlapping, shimmering colour. Others tell a story. My pencil drawings are bold and complex and tap into the subterranean workings of our minds and hearts. The prints of these paintings and drawings are able to be enjoyed by all contemporary art lovers.
I studied Art and Design at Prahran College and Fine art at RMIT and have worked as an illustrator ever since with detours into waiting tables, cooking in cafes, making and raising children, painting stained glass windows, and flower picking.
I live in Melbourne with my family.
9 things about me
1 I used to work as a painter of stained glass windows using the traditional 12th century technique
2 My favourite art forms are music, film and painting/illustration
My least favourite is interpretative dance
3 I used to do tattoos in biro on my friends at school. They were a big hit.
4 In the sixties I came to Australia on a ship as a ten pound pom. I bought a pink plastic budgerigar with a silver bell from the ships’ gift shop. It’s one of my most treasured possessions.
5 I have moved house 36 times and I really want to stay in one place now
6 I collect swap cards, my favourites are from the 1960’s and 70’s
7 I started a business in 2007 selling my illustrations as greeting cards. It’s still going, much to my surprise. You can find them here if you want to have a look: http://www.gillianmary.com
8 Instead of buying a red porsche, I celebrated my mid-life crisis by going back to university to do a degree in Fine Art.
9 A few years ago I became obsessed with bees and made a hive. The bees came and they were happy. They made lots of honey. After one too many stings I got anaphylaxis and had to say goodbye to bees.
